Abstract

This mixed-method study examined the influence of social media on English as a Second Language (ESL) students' communication skills. Using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), the study collected quantitative data from 86 ESL students and qualitative data from 10 students. Results showed that social media had negative effects on students' health and education, but was beneficial for supplementing learning. The study recommends that higher-level students should utilize various social media platforms to enhance their English communication skills. For these students social media can serve as a valuable tool to refine their abilities, such as written communication, reading comprehension, and overall language proficiency. This study also indicates that social media can be particularly beneficial for ESL students who struggle with spoken English. Overall, the findings support the influence of social media on ESL students' English language communication skills.
